Terrier/Wire-coated Dog Breeds

The dogs with "Terrier-coats" feature dogs with distinct wire-structured coats. The coat is typically a weather-proof harsh wire outer coat with a softer undercoat. What makes these coats unique is that the outer coat hairs die and remain trapped in the follicle in layers until removed typically by hand-stripping.

Impacted skin follicles is a common problem with these breeds when haircuts are performed without stripping out the dead hairs. This problem is worse when these coats are shaved to short lengths.

Includes the following dog breeds:

  • Airedale Terrier
  • American Cocker Spaniel ***
  • Border Terrier
  • Brittany Spaniel ***
  • Brussels Griffon
  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel ***
  • Clumber Spaniel ***
  • English Cocker Spaniel ***
  • English Setter ***
  • English Springer Spaniel ***
  • German Wirehaired Pointer
  • Irish Wolfhound
  • Jack Russell Terrier
  • Japanese Chin ***
  • Otterhound
  • Schnauzer (all varieties)
  • Scottish Terrier
  • Welsh Springer Spaniel ***
  • West Highland Terrier
  • Wire Fox Terrier
  • Wirehaired Dachshund
  • Wirehaired Vizsla

*** Although Spaniels tend to have

a smoother coat texture, the coat

structure behaves like a typical

Terrier Breed and should be

hand-stripped for proper care
